http://www.telus.com/en/bc/get-help/service-updates-changes/internet-and-email/article.do?topic=&subtopic= Internet Traffic Management Policy Effective June 15, 2014, TELUS will begin using a new technical measure to manage Internet traffic on small portions of our network to ensure our customers have the best Internet experience possible. What this means for you Most customers will not experience any change. This change will only impact a small number of our customers in communities where demand for Internet usage is greater than the available network capacity. Only at times of congestion, a small number of customers using the most bandwidth will be affected and may notice slower speeds. This will allow us to provide the majority (upwards of 80%) of customers using less bandwidth with a better experience and more consistent Internet speeds. At TELUS, we are continually investing in our networks and are working hard to alleviate congestion from all affected communities. We know a reliable Internet experience matters to you, and we’re on a continuous journey to provide you with the best service possible. Effective June 15, 2014, TELUS will begin managing Internet traffic on small portions of our network to ensure our customers have the best Internet experience possible. What this means for you Most customers will not experience any change. This change will only impact a small number of customers in communities where demand for Internet usage is greater than the available network capacity. Why is TELUS applying traffic management policies? Canadians are relying on the Internet for more and more of their communications and entertainment needs. At TELUS, we’ve experienced this trend first hand and witnessed Internet traffic double on our network over the past two years alone as customers enjoy increasing amounts of HD video and interactive content online. We understand that our customers want reliable access to high quality Internet and invest heavily in our networks every year. We are continually investing in our networks and are working hard to keep pace with demand and alleviate congestion from all affected communities. In select areas we will be temporarily managing Internet traffic during peak periods of use until we have completed the necessary network builds, expansions, and upgrades to meet customer demand. We’ve put this change in place because we want all of our customers to have a great Internet experience. How does this policy impact Internet traffic? We manage Internet traffic by identifying congestion on portions of our network. At times when congestion is present, our traffic management practices work to ensure Internet traffic is split fairly among all customers. This practice measures overall Internet usage in a given area over a recent interval of time. Only at times of congestion, TELUS will redistribute network capacity across all users by temporarily reducing the speed of the few heavy users; this will provide better speeds to the majority of other customers (upwards of 80%). This ensures that Internet capacity is distributed fairly amongst all users. This measure treats all types of Internet traffic equally; it does not discriminate by content or application. Does this change impact me? Most customers will not experience any change. This change will only impact a small number of our customers in communities where demand for Internet usage is greater than the available network capacity. As of June 15, 2014 TELUS will be managing Internet traffic during times of congestion on portions of our network in the following communities:* Armstrong Grand Forks Port Hardy Ashcroft Grimshaw Port McNeill Blackfalds Hazelton Rocky Mountain House Cold Lake Innisfail Salmo Clearwater Kaslo Slave Lake Drumheller Lloydminster Salmon Arm Duncan Lumby Smithers Denman Island Millet Stettler Drayton Valley Merritt Tofino Didsbury Nakusp Terrace Elkford Nelson Turner Valley Elk Point Oliver Vulcan Fort St John Pender Harbour Vermilion Grand Centre Ponoka Westlock Wetaskiwin We’re on a continuous journey to improve our services and provide you with the best experience possible. If you have any questions about this change, we’d love to hear from you. Chat live with one of our representatives at telus.com/chat * Communities impacted by traffic management practices are subject to change without notice. -- When peasants own the government, there is freedom. Some web pages slow to load and speakeasy speedtest slow New York?

Last 24+ hrs some web pages I go to have been slow to load...Even utube this morning would stall out. I've checked speeds at speedtest.net and there fine (telus 25=24 down 3 up) I check another speedtest site "speakeasy.net/speedtest" and notice if trying New York test it takes a while for the speedtest to start. Could my slow web page loads (some sites not all) and the slow New York testing be related? I'm in vancouver and as I said speedtest.net is fine, just some pages taking longer then normal, and sometimes have to refresh the page to get full load. (note tried 3 diff computer and all same thing...win,osx,chromebox)

Telus to invest $12M in Lethbridge

Telus is investing $12 million in Lethbridge and area this year to increase available Internet speeds in some neighbourhoods, expand coverage of wireless services, extend the reach of Optik TV and connect more homes and businesses to high-speed Internet. “This significant $12-million investment continues to bring the most advanced communications infrastructure available in the world today to Lethbridge and the surrounding area,” said Telus general manager Fred Weinheimer. “By offering choice to more customers in Lethbridge with Optik TV and enhancing our wireless network with LTE for those living, working and travelling through the area, we are pleased to address the ever-growing demand for Telus technology.” This year, Telus’ investment will advance in Lethbridge by installing new wireless sites to expand the reach of LTE and enhance wireless capacity by filling in coverage gaps, introducing Optik TV to more local residences, bringing faster Internet speeds to residents and businesses, updating older infrastructure and technology to enhance network reliability and providing access to health-care IT solutions. The investment is part of Telus’ commitment to invest $2.6 billion in Alberta from 2014-2016. By the end of 2016, Telus’ investment in operations and infrastructure across the province since 2000 will exceed $39 billion. http://lethbridgeherald.com/news/local-news/2014/05/16/telus-to-invest-12m-in-lethbridge

Actiontec ignoring QoS markings on upstream traffic

$

I have Optik 50 and I am trying to get my VoIP traffic prioritized on the upstream since the Actiontec seems to have bufferbloat and any file upload in parallel kills my VoIP call. I read that for Optik TV, DSCP of CS5 (40) is used so I configured my VoIP traffic to be tagged with the same DSCP value. However when doing a large file upload, all my VoIP packets are still dropped or have a huge latency so it doesn't seem to be working. Is the Actiontec no longer using CS5 or is Telus somehow restricting the priority to TV traffic only?

This started occurring yesterday, when I couldn't connect/play Everquest (of all things), which is normally very stable with a 150ms ping. Used two different V1000H's (one with NCS firmware, later updated by Telus to the 121L.12 firmware) - after a reset it would be fine, and then five minutes later would just timeout all requests (EXCEPT to port 80, as web browsing still worked slowly). Telus TV isn't affected. Everything internal to the LAN works fine. It's just everything external except for port 80. Picked up a new V1000H (it was running the 31.30L.55 firmware) and dropped it in, and it worked fine (around 4pm). Came back home to find the ping/traceroute info above. Telus support told me to call back tomorrow, as currently they're upgrading/updating their tools, so they can't really look at anything right now (wait, what?). Grrr. This is useless, I can't DO anything with my connection.

[BC] dmz/bridge

Hi, I've been thinking the past while on changing over to telus. The only concern I have right now is bridging the modem or just dmz it via modem to pfsense. The setup I have for the actiontec(vh1000) runs via the HPNA through the place(townhouse 3x receivers) and a separate line for my shaw connection. As of now the connection for the telus is only for tv but it's getting harder to resist that upload provided seeing i'm going to host a TF2 server... and shaw 100 isn't exactly worth it for the price... Is there a way to use the existing HPNA or is it preferred to be all done through ethernet?

TELUS DSL upgrades in BC (Vanderhoof)

So does anyone know if there is an actual schedule of what Telus is planning in terms of upgrades in terms of DSL. It seems strange they would not have some kind a plan.

Frequent disconnects since switching to 50/10 plan.

Long story short I had 25/5 for 2+ years and had little to no problems. Since upgrading to the 50/10 plan I disconnect frequently usually 3+ times within a 5 minute time frame (this usually happens 2-3 times per day). The internet physically goes out (on the router). When I talked to the tech support they confirmed that they saw the internet going out. I had a tech come by and try to fix the firmware on the router, he wasn't able to get much accomplished as far as the router was concerned but he checked all the lines/wiring and said it was not the issue. I am using an actiontec v1000h. My tested download was 90mb down (I forget the up) with 3.5 jitter.

Log into your Telus account to see your usage. Click on the Internet section and then upper right of the details frame will have a link to click. Compare it to your own routers data chart and see how they compare. My previous bill was missing a few days, as usual.

[AB] YouTube slow

I've noticed YouTube has been periodically slow for a couple of days now. Currently I'm downloading a video at 15 kilobytes per second from r10.sn-vgqsene7.googlevideo.com. It takes about 10 minutes to download each minute of 720p video. As far as I've found, the problem is isolated specifically to YouTube. Can anyone suggest anything I could do about this? I have the 15/1 plan with a Speedtouch modem. Thanks, Mango

SmartRG SR505N on Telus. Possible?

Is anyone here using the SmartRG SR505N VDSL2 Modem on Telus. If so, what are your likes or dislikes of it? I'm currently running an Actiontec v1000h that is having issues on HS50 and Telus wants to replace it with the ZyXEL VSG-1432. Or should I just go ahead and take the ZyXEL since it's free to me as a customer. Thanks :)

Line check

Hello all, I was just curious if one of the helpful techs in here could do a check on my line? Moved to a greenfield a few months ago and the available services here are limited to 15Mbps and 1hd 1sd optic tv. Based on my adsl2+ stats it appears that my loop length is well over a 1000m and my physical distance to the dslam is approximately 450m. I'm curious if my approximations are accurate or not because I would sure like to get on a higher plan with the possibility of UBB looming on the horizon. At my previous home I was on the 50/10 plan and the data included suited our needs nicely. Unfortunately GPON doesn't look like it's happening anytime soon here so any info on what is possible on my copper loop would be greatly appreciated.

Internet 6 Plan Being Phased out?

I'm currently on the internet 6 plan, but I noticed it doesn't show up on the Telus website anymore: http://www.telus.com/en/bc/internet/ The internet 15 plan is now listed as "3 to 15 Mbps download speed". Does this mean the internet 6 plan has been phased out/discontinued in favour of this more expensive plan?

TV on fiber or keep vdsl

So I am getting fiber installed in a week (which I cant wait to try), however I have one question. i was given the option yesterday of having all my services put on one fiber connection (I currently have two VDSL connections, one is dedicated to inet and the other is dedicated to TV) or keeping the TV on vdsl and switching only the inet to fiber. I choose to put all services on fiber. However, now I am wondering if I should have left TV on its own dedicated VDSL connection? One benefit to converging them is that the TV connection has no inet access (listed as high speed zero on the Telus side) so any of the fun little apps including the galaxy music app do not work for me. What I am really wondering now, will there be any noticeable drop in performance with TVs being used (I would not think so on fiber but I have no experience with it)? Guess that is two questions.

[AB] telus 50mb

About 3-4 months ago I got a letter/pamphlet from telus saying that optik tv and faster internet was going to be available in my area.. Currently I can only get 3mb service through telus so I have been with the local cable company(eastlink) for 40mb internet and cable. My issue with eastlink is I'm not a fan of their channel grouping and their guide. And for their internet; a much higher ping than I was getting with the telus 3mb dinosaur connection.. Ive been waiting for this welcome change and have already purchased 5 optik tv recievers from a boxing day deal. My question is how long should it take after I got that letter to be able to get telus's internet service and optik tv? Is there anyway to get a ballpark estimate?

I added unlimited Internet to my existing Telus Internet plan on June 6 for $30. So, $90 for unlimited Internet on their 25 plan is better than $160 like it is with Shaw.

The Actiontec V1000H firmware just updated from 31.30L.57 to 31.121L.11 This update adds ipv6 support to the router, along with some more advanced options. Click here to view screenshots to see more detailed info about the update. Sadly, ipv6 internet access hasn't been enabled by TELUS just yet, but the V1000H is now 100% ipv6 ready.
