Calvin in Prince George

Good Morning! Firstly, my apologies, since I have been delinquent in posting this - it should have been done in a more timely fashion, but I got caught up in one thing and another so it took longer than it should have. (btw - I do know how to spell 'Service', but there wasn't enough room in the Anon Name box to make it fit...) I'll try to be little more brief this time around: Please extend my compliments to Calvin at your call centre in Prince George, BC. I had occasion to phone your customer service line the other week, and it was Calvin who took the call - unfortunately for Calvin, I took the opportunity to address several questions that I'd had in the back of my mind in addition to the matter I was calling about. He addressed each and every one of them with clear and concise information - by the time the call had concluded, I already had an e-mail in my in-box resolving one of them - can't get any faster than that! Needless to say, he also addressed the primary reason for my call in the first place - a great help, and very much appreciated - Thanks! HD in Trail, BC

Help - Optik TV/Internet

Ok this is killing me. Pardon my ignorance as my networking skills aren't as top notch. I have a GPON address, fibre right to the home. I have the white alcatel lucent box which the fibre lines goes into, and then of course this actiontec router. I've grown very unhappy with the performance of the router as of late so I went and bought an Asus RT-N66U router because I know it handles IPTV. I set it up as such: Use DHCP routes - RFC3442 & Microsoft Enable multicast routing - Yes Enable efficient multicast forwarding - Yes UDP Proxy(Udpxy) - 0 Rebooted the 2 cable boxes. All seemed to work. After a couple of minutes, picture on TV would freeze. PVR recordings will not play. A few times internet performance basically just died. Does anyone know of any better settings or how to get this working? I did turn on QoS on the router, but it did not make a difference. And since I have FTTH ability I do know I can just not use the actiontec all together or worry about bridging it.

[Mobility] Telus pricing is a joke

Telus bough Public Mobile and now they are FORCING ex Public Mobile customers to buy new hardware AND to move to $5-$10 more expensive plans! And this AFTER removing teh unlimited data plan and replacing it with 1GB plan More, (I can say this a theft) they put the price of the Motorola G for PM customers with a price of $250 while for Koodo and Telus is $200 !!! Only to APPEAR that they offer a decent discount for existing customers, as the phone is priced for existing customers at $169! Why not price the phone at $999 and then offer a $830 DISCOUNT!!!??? This is not normal and it only shown that each time the Big 3 touch something they distroy it!!! Shame on you Telus! You claim everywhere you are better than Bell and Rogers. YOU ARE NOT! Maybe even worst!

Reality check ... Slow

Xbox 360, Download the most recent update for Battlefield 4 and it took over half an hour. My buddy down the street same update same time of day took less than 10 minutes, , he's with Novus, and it's the same every time. Telus may not call it throttling but just like "OPTIK" they call it something else.

Slow Internet - Ready to Switch

Hi guys, For the last 6 months I have been having this problem with slow internet with Telus. I am on the Telus Internet 15 plan. Currently my speedtest results are as follows: Download Speed: 7.79Mbps Upload Speed: 0.74Mbps The funny thing is, i know exactly what the problem is. If i login to my Telus Router (Actiontec V1000H) and click on Status, it lists my Downstream and Upstream Rates as: Downstream Rate: 10239Kbps Upstream Rate: 1021Kbps When my internet used to work properly, the downstream rate is somewhere in the 17000Kbps and upstream is much greater then that. I have called Telus more then a few times and after they do their troubleshooting(like telling me I have a virus, I have too many wireless pc's connected, etc even though I tell them this is the cause), they go and change this value. The problem is when they change it, everytime my home telephone rings, it disconnects my internet. But eventually, the number will automatically go back to 10239Kbps. I am beyond frustrated with Telus and am thinking of going back to Shaw. I never had issues like this with Shaw where it would disconnect or my speed decreases by half. Any suggestions?

Received a notification that today, Telus is doing work in town, we may lose connectivity for short periods of time, and our ip address will change. Does that mean we just might be getting needed bandwidth upgrades?? :D

Just a heads up, if you are part of the preview beta program on the Xbox One, you will get an update today that enable the Xbox Oneguide and control the of the CIS430/330 using the Kinect voice command. Feel free to report any compatibility issue you might have with it. I am part of the beta program. The support of the IR Code and control of the STB is all handle by Microsoft (as far as I know). There is a MS beta forum to report issue. Dont' hesitate to do so. -- I may work for, but do not necessarily represent the views and beliefs of TELUS Communications.

i have a question about telus internet 6. if you are in an area where 15 is available on adsl2+ does the internet 6 get adsl2+ provisioned at a different rate or is just standard dsl technology involved? im curios if latency could change from the 15 to the 6, but if it stays on adsl2+ i dont know why it would. thanks

Is this allowed? Modem to Switch to Actiontec and Netgear Router

Hi, a little bit of a back story here. I changed around a few themes with my Optik TV online and the changes never came through to my tv. I assume this is because at the time I was not using the Actiontec router supplied by Telus. I have since added a switch from the modem and from the switch it goes to the Actiontec which in turn connects to the digital tv boxes and the switch also goes to my Netgear router which then handles the wireless and wired computer connections. I believe this works fine as I have 2 different ip addresses from Telus. I have contacted Telus and asked them to update my channel selection 2 more times and so far nothing has changed. I even asked them to update the firmware on the Actiontec v1000h but the tech said that he was unable to get in contact with the unit. I have also plugged in only the Actiontec directly to the modem and the digital boxes into the Actiontec and the channels still were unable to be updated, nor was the Actiontec able to be "reached" by a tech. Any advice or tips, I have no problems with my service other than trying to change a few themes around and I am unable to. And the fact that Telus is unable to see the Actiontec v1000h may be part of the problem.

Hi. Planning to get a server from OVH in Quebec for VOIP and other purposes. My friends have a variety of connections. Please provide a traceroute to ping.ovh.ca. Latency is partially important to me. [ALL] Actiontek V1000h config help

I'm would like to enable the transparent bridge mode (they've conveniently hidden) on the Telus ActionTek V1000h so I can use my own router with it and not have the issue of a double-NAT (currently set up this way, but it's causing a couple issues). My current firmware is 31.121L.12 which doesn't seem to work with any of the known root credentials I've come across (also having tried resetting unplugged from DSL line). Is there any more current way to get access to the advanced settings on this firmware so I can properly connect my RT-AC68U (1000x better router) and just use the Actiontek unit as a modem (something you can do anyway if it wan't for having Optik TV - limited because of an extra service)? TIA - Cheers!

Telus port blocking question

Hi, I am currently a SHAW customer and have been for many years but lately have been thinking of getting Telus 50 or 100 if available in my area. Mainly I’m interested in the upload speeds more than anything. I run a few small servers (all for personal use) that require incoming ports to be open such as 21, 22, 80, 443, 1723, 3389 and a few others. I know that SHAW does not block any incoming ports aside for 25 SMTP and as far as I know Telus blocks most of the ports I listed above and I’m sure a few more. I wanted to ask if anyone knows if this has changes recently or are they still blocking them on residential connection with Dynamic IPs? Also, my SHAW connection has a dynamic IP but it does not change often, if at all. The only time it ever changed on me was when I got a new Router or cloned a different Mac address on to it to force it to change. Does anyone know how often the Telus IPs change as I have a few domains that I would want to forward to my IP and it would be an inconvenience if I would have to change any of my current setup. I know there are options for Dynamic DNS but I would prefer to not use it if I don’t have to. Thanks in advance.

DNS Amplification Attacks

I just received a revised Alert from US-Cert regarding UDP-based Amplification Attacks: https://www.us-cert.gov/ncas/alerts/TA14-017A Anyone operating a DNS server should be aware of this vulnerability. I have remotely maintained a DNS/Web server for many years, and a couple of months ago our DNS server was used as an attack vector against predominantly Chinese based networks. DNS uses port 53 UDP packets, which because of their nature do not verify the actual source. Therefore, the source address can be spoofed. If the DNS server offers open recursion, the responses sent to the spoofed address can be many times larger than the original request. Our server did not even offer recursion, but it was still used as an attack vector. The only way we noticed was due to the log files suddenly increasing 400 fold. Most DNS servers do not log query activity, so operators of these servers might not even know their server was being used as an attack vector. To limit our own exposure, I wrote a filtering program that dropped duplicated queries. But in general, there is not a lot that an individual can do except restrict the IP addresses that can use their DNS server. It is really up to the ISP to perform network ingress filtering. I don't completely understand it, but the routing device would evaluate whether it is possible to reach the source IP address of the packet via the interface that transmitted the packet. Perhaps a Telus Tech could respond relative to how Telus handles this problem.

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r29039164-Telus-Actiontec-v2000h-memory-dump- I recently upgraded to 50Mbit service and got this GW as a replacement for my v1000. I'm sure I can't be the only one but after reading the post above I've tried almost every combination I can to login to this device and switch it to bridge mode. Can anyone here point me in the right direction? Thanks

Slow speeds to the US

Has anyone noticed that connections to the us have been unusually slow the last week or two? Speed tests within Alberta and BC max out my connection per usual, but any tests in the us are only 10-20% Of my max speed. Websites hosted in the us are overall much slower than usual.
