[AB] telus 50mb

About 3-4 months ago I got a letter/pamphlet from telus saying that optik tv and faster internet was going to be available in my area.. Currently I can only get 3mb service through telus so I have been with the local cable company(eastlink) for 40mb internet and cable. My issue with eastlink is I'm not a fan of their channel grouping and their guide. And for their internet; a much higher ping than I was getting with the telus 3mb dinosaur connection.. Ive been waiting for this welcome change and have already purchased 5 optik tv recievers from a boxing day deal. My question is how long should it take after I got that letter to be able to get telus's internet service and optik tv? Is there anyway to get a ballpark estimate?

[AB] Upgrading to 50mbps

So I got a call from Telus while I was at work today telling me that they were sorry but that my scheduled appointment for Friday to upgrade to 50mbps had been cancelled because the hardware out here was not supporting it just yet. This would be fine if it wasn't the second time it happened. I had called about a month ago and had gone through the whole process and even taking a day off from work to wait for a technician to show up. They cancelled the night before. So I called on Monday this week , the lady said it was definitely available and she'd have a technician over as soon as possible. I went ahead and booked the day off from work yesterday. Low and behold.. appointment is cancelled again. So now I've lost 2 days worth of work and now I'm wondering what to do. Am I going to go through the same process again the next time I call ? Anyways sorry for the rant , I'm a little ticked off that they jumped the gun not once but twice.

[AB] Does anyone know what Telus is doing to my internet?

I was suppose to have a tech over Friday to upgrade my internet to the Telus 50. After the appointment time passed and no one showed I called Telus to find out that appointment was cancelled (they never told me and I had to skip work to stay home that day). They promised that with my current setup they could remotely upgrade my line. Well for the past 24 hours this has been my internet speed (when it is actually working): http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3276725560 I phoned and talked to 2 different people only to be told that this is part of the upgrade and I should wait until Sunday for it to finish. What remote upgrade takes more than 24 hours? I currently have a fiber hub and the Actiontec in my house and I need my internet back soon because 2 of my sons need that connection for their school work. Any idea what is happening and is there a solution? Thanks.

[ALL] Port Forwarding Question

I am on Telus and have the V1000 router/modem (supplied by Telus). I have setup a ubuntu server. I have the sever 'listening' to port 22. I have setup port forwarding to forward port 22 to the IP address of my server. From outside the network I can ssh to my server by going to the IP address of my modem and port 22. The port forwarding is clearly working because I can connect to my server that way. However, when I try to connect to my server through a browser - no such luck. In particular I can call up a simple web page on my server. Anyone know why this would be the case?

Second older router, Set Top Box, and PS3.

My current set up is just the Actiontec V1000 in the basement but the wifey is complaining about no wi-fi service on the top floor. I currently have 2 Ethernet wires running up to the main floor connecting the PS3 and PVR STB. My proposed setup: Old D-Link WBR-1310 (bridged) on main floor to increase wifi range. PS3 and the PVR STB to be wired into the D-Link. Will this cause the D-Link/PVR STB issues if it's recording 3 HD shows and some intense Battlefield is going on? I do have an extra Actiontec V1000 lying around but no power cord. I can't seem to find a power cord or AC Adaptor to buy anywhere. Thank you for your help

[BC] Telus 100 Mbps ...Really!!!

I am getting the real feeling this forum is nothing more than a marketing propaganda site. Why would most consumers need 100 Mbps download capacity. It is just the Service providers needing consumers to spend more money. We went from 25 to 50 Mbps and there is no difference in actual real time download speed. We never go past what seems like a cap of 5-6 Mbps total combined between the several computers we have and our upload speed is caped at if we are lucky 500 Kb, uploads may rise to 1 Mbps then fall to 250 - 500 Kbps. Going from 25 to the 50 Mbps only put more money into the Telus money bucket. There is a need for more companies to increase the competition in this country. Now I see the fees are increasing, for what sub par service ... We are more frustrated than we are happy with our service.

Telus 50 (bonded vs ?)?

I heard there are 2 implementations of Telus 50, one is a dual bonded 25 and the other is 'true' (?) 50? is there a noticeable difference between the two? I'd prefer the single line 50...

[Phone] loop current is 62 mA

I'm having a problem with my phone line. Sometimes I experience severe audio distortion. I noticed that when the problem occurs, the loop current is around 62 mA. When things are working properly, the loop current is around 26 mA. I read on another forum that the loop current should be between 23 and 27 mA. Is that correct? Is this a problem I can fix, or is this a problem at the CO? If this is a Telus problem, what should a Telus tech do to fix it? ADSL seems to be unaffected.

[BC] Tv and Internet

I am on 50Mbps. Was watching Olympics on web when I decided to see if CBC had the same event on TV. Yes it was, but the stream on TV was faster than the internet one how come?

Sporadic loss of bandwidth in the Smithers area

As of today, residents in the area have noticed that all bandwidth will drop off for some time and then come back up again. Seems to be happening every few hours. At first I thought it was myself, but I have checked with friends in the area and they say that it's happened to them as well. Telkwa also seems to be effected. Can anyone shed some light on what's going on?

30 Minute Near End FEC Interleave

We are on the Optik 50/10 plan. For the last couple of weeks or so our 30 Minute Near End FEC Interleave error rate has increased from 500-600 to 5000-8000 and our connection seems clunky. Is it the V1000H router?

DNS Amplification Attacks

I just received a revised Alert from US-Cert regarding UDP-based Amplification Attacks: https://www.us-cert.gov/ncas/alerts/TA14-017A Anyone operating a DNS server should be aware of this vulnerability. I have remotely maintained a DNS/Web server for many years, and a couple of months ago our DNS server was used as an attack vector against predominantly Chinese based networks. DNS uses port 53 UDP packets, which because of their nature do not verify the actual source. Therefore, the source address can be spoofed. If the DNS server offers open recursion, the responses sent to the spoofed address can be many times larger than the original request. Our server did not even offer recursion, but it was still used as an attack vector. The only way we noticed was due to the log files suddenly increasing 400 fold. Most DNS servers do not log query activity, so operators of these servers might not even know their server was being used as an attack vector. To limit our own exposure, I wrote a filtering program that dropped duplicated queries. But in general, there is not a lot that an individual can do except restrict the IP addresses that can use their DNS server. It is really up to the ISP to perform network ingress filtering. I don't completely understand it, but the routing device would evaluate whether it is possible to reach the source IP address of the packet via the interface that transmitted the packet. Perhaps a Telus Tech could respond relative to how Telus handles this problem.

Telus 50 with Actiontec V1000 and V2000

I have optik tv and 15mb Internet. I also have the ALU so I have a my optik running on V1000 and the internet on the ALU. In my area, I can only get the Telus 50 if its bonded which will have to use the V2000. Can I just "dummy" the V2000 like the ALU? and keep the V1000 for TV?

[AB] Telus won't activate available ports for upgrade to 50Mbps

For the past few years we have been calling Telus to upgrade our Internet from 6Mbps to 50Mbps since this service is available in the area (Cold Lake). The last time we called Telus they sent down a technician to check the lines. My neighbour currently has the 50Mbps service from Telus and the technician confirmed that several individuals on the same DSLAM have 50Mbps. The tech informed us that there are a large number of ports available and that he could upgrade us to 50Mbps. After trying to get it working for 2 days both the tech and us were told by Telus that they did not want to activate the available ports. Apparently no one in Telus seems to know who to talk to get this problem resolved. We tried talking with managers and retention and it’s the same BS all the time they just say they can’t do anything about it. If they cannot upgrade our service to 50Mbps in the very near future we will be switching over to EastLink. On a side note it’s also really strange that all the speed tests we have done always show that our ISP is Bell Aliant and not Telus. This is strange since Bell only offers commercial internet in the area.

error rate

I have a question: On my router there is the Xdsl information and there is a 30 Minute Near End FEC Interleave and a 30 Minute Far End FEC Interleave section. My 30 Minute Far End FEC Interleave is (0), but my 30 Minute Near End FEC Interleave will start obviously at (0, but over a 5-6 hour period will keep going higher. My question is, why does the FEC error rate keep increasing over time and why does it not stay at a constant level?

Telus port blocking question

Hi, I am currently a SHAW customer and have been for many years but lately have been thinking of getting Telus 50 or 100 if available in my area. Mainly I’m interested in the upload speeds more than anything. I run a few small servers (all for personal use) that require incoming ports to be open such as 21, 22, 80, 443, 1723, 3389 and a few others. I know that SHAW does not block any incoming ports aside for 25 SMTP and as far as I know Telus blocks most of the ports I listed above and I’m sure a few more. I wanted to ask if anyone knows if this has changes recently or are they still blocking them on residential connection with Dynamic IPs? Also, my SHAW connection has a dynamic IP but it does not change often, if at all. The only time it ever changed on me was when I got a new Router or cloned a different Mac address on to it to force it to change. Does anyone know how often the Telus IPs change as I have a few domains that I would want to forward to my IP and it would be an inconvenience if I would have to change any of my current setup. I know there are options for Dynamic DNS but I would prefer to not use it if I don’t have to. Thanks in advance.

v1000h max number of 16 wifi devices?

$

Hi, first post here. I've done a search but can't find any reference to this, possibly because most users don't generally have 12 people in their houses. My friend who runs snowboarding tours currently has 12 people in the house she rents from us, and of course they have a multiplicity of devices. She switched to Optik TV before the snow season started and not many in the house. The setup is VDSL jnto the V1000H via telephone line input, 2 STBs connected to 2 of the 4 Actiontec LAN ports. The issue she has is that all the occupants have at least a cellphone, and most have another wifi device. We have discovered that the Actiontec will only accept connections from a maximum of 16 wifi devices, which seems very restrictive and is a total nuisance to all users. The actiontec is setup with the Telus default settings. I have checked the DHCP address range (using the root password for the .57 firmware) and it is set at 192.168.1.64 - .253. The connected wifi devices are allocated ip addresses throughout that range. I am wondering if any of the experts on the Actiontec can shed any light as to why it will only allow 16 wifi devices to connect simultaneously, and/or suggest any way around it, rather than trying to subvert the Telus restricions on this devices home networking capabilities. I'm a former Australian telecommunications networking researcher, and am surprised that a telco would force such a technically primitive and restricted piece of equipment on its customers, with no apparent means to implement ones own technically competent home networking solution for the many problems these restrictions can present to relatively common issues. Any insights would be much appreciated.

Upgrading from 3mbps to 6mbps

Hi Everyone, I've been stuck on 3mbps for years in Salmon Arm. Luckily Telus has been upgrading our entire town with fiber the last few months. According to Telus I now qualify for 50mbps, yay! I called customer support and asked if I could be upgraded to 6mbps (since it's in the same package I currently have - no addition cost). I was told they couldn't upgrade me until a fiber line was run from the street to my house. I said I was only looking for 6mbps, and not 50mbps, but the answer remained the same. Does this sound accurate? I would have thought they would have upgraded our neighbourhood "Telus boxes" (dslam?) with new fiber too, so the old copper lines would be able to get a little bit more speed. Any thoughts? A whole new fiber line seems like a lot of trouble just to get 6mbps. Thanks.

When using the Telus TV Guide is there an option to increase the scrolling speed?
